Jesus Rejected Political Power

Posted in : Theology and Political Philosophy on by : Jason Mock

You know, it’s interesting that some of the justifications we try and use, Jesus himself didn’t use.

You need to vote to…
You should run for office to…
We need Christians in government to…

And typically you’ll find justifications following those statements. Usually, it’s so we can make it better or save lives, or some even say to eliminate government from within.

But which of those justifications did Jesus use?

Satan offered him that kind of political power.

“If you’ll bow down, I’ll give you all the kingdoms of the world.”

How many lives could Jesus have saved physically? How many governments could he have made better? How many bad guys could he have thrown out of power?

Jesus literally had a chance to basically be able to cast the deciding votes for all governments and all people everywhere. He could have sweepingly enacted “good: for the entire physical earth.

But he passed on the opportunity in order to stick to wise principles. You shall worship the Lord and him only shall you serve.

For us, not returning the same as is done to us, blessing our enemies and not resisting are our principles.
