“We” Are Not the Government: GodArchy Podcast #12

Posted in : GodArchy Podcast, Government and Society on by : Michael Maharrey

You often hear people assert, “We are the government; the government is us.” In a nutshell: no!

Here’s a question: if we are the government, as so many people assert, why am I suing myself? (I have been involved in an open records lawsuit with the city of Lexington for a year-and-a-half. )

In truth, when you really think it through, the notion that “we” are the government is absurd. In this episode of the GodArchy Podcast, I take this idea apart.  Along the way, I reveal the fallacy in thinking a majority creates moral legitimacy,  the shortcomings of democracy, the danger in conflating society and the state,  and I explain why we should view government as an independent institution – not a reflection of some mythical collective will.
