The Moral Choice for President

Posted in : American on by : Michael Maharrey

Earlier today, I stumbled across a Facebook post imploring me to vote Trump.

“I pray we will make the right choice and America will restore its moral compass.”

If your plan for saving America and restoring its moral compass involves casting a vote in this election, you might want to consider a different plan.

And yet a vast numbers of Americans seem to think they will find some kind of collective salvation in the story line of this political theater.

Last week, I was a guest on a Christian radio show. It was very much a thing of the “Christian right,” complete with numerous obligatory references to sodomy and abortion. But it was the complete disconnect when it came to discussions about the presidential election that I found striking.

In this strange radio world, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama serve as agents of Satan, and Donald Trump represents our salvation.

The host spent a great deal of energy pontificating on the moral shortcomings of Obama and Clinton, (particularly their support for the aforementioned abortion and sodomy.) At one point he actually connected Obama with demonic forces. But the pastor hosting the show completely ignored Trump’s moral transgressions. In fact, the Donald was held up as the last great hope for the United States. Never mind his sexual indiscretions, including a lawsuit alleging he raped a teenage girl, multiple wives and crude comments about women. I guess since Trump’s sexual sins don’t involve homosexuality, we can all look the other way.

But many don’t look away. In fact, Democrats have built an entire campaign on blasting away at Trump’s moral shortcomings. He’s a racist. He’s a misogynist. He’s a tax-cheat. Meanwhile, they ignore Hillary’s litany of lies, corruption, along with the trail of bodies dragging behind the Clintons. Not to mention the fact that she is an unapologetic war-monger.

You might drum up some pragmatic reasons to vote for either Hillary or Donald, but you simply can’t make a moral/ethical case for either one of them. The fact that their supporters have to resort to justifying their candidate’s shortcomings with, “Well, [insert candidate’s name here] isn’t as bad as [insert candidate’s name here],” should tell you something.

They’re both awful.

Christians on both sides of the political aisle need to quit trying to make some kind of moral case for casting a vote in this presidential election. It doesn’t exist. In fact, the entire American system of government rests on a foundation of coercion, force and violence.

That’s no way to restore a moral compass.
